For the first instalment of our ‘Meet The Team’ series, we sat down for a cuppa with our Senior Designer Mike and discussed a range of interesting topics.
Mike discusses his career and role here at Sixtwo, insights into web design and shares advice for anyone starting out in the industry.
How long have you been a web designer?
I have been a graphic designer since 1995, specialising in website UX and UI in the last 7 years.
How long have you been at Sixtwo?
I have been at Sixtwo for just over 6 years, having joined in 2016.
To you, what is a good website/brand?
In both cases they need to represent the business offering accurately, and they have to be memorable.
Are there any trends you can predict for the future? What trends can you predict will be big in 2023?
I don’t follow trends in the design industry, it’s the quickest way to date your work and sell your client short, in my opinion. I’ve seen things come around time and again in the last 27 years. I prefer to lean into tried and tested visuals solutions, based upon solid data.
How did you get into Design and UX?
I’ve always been a problem solver, who liked drawing and computers. Back in the early 90’s it was a no brainer what I would do for a job. But then the internet came along and the possibilities blew my mind; I had to be a part of that.
What would be your biggest piece of advice to any looking for a new website?
Take the time to understand your target audience, who they are, what they want, their pain points, etc. and plan the website with their needs always in mind.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Sixtwo?
We have a great team, and I love collaborating with colleagues to create the best solution we can for clients.
What’s your favourite part of the design process?
I love the early strategy phase – the research and problem solving – where we get to learn about the client, their business and their customers, then work with them to develop a solution.
