World Backup Day, will you take the pledge?

On the 31st of March 2024 Worldbackup.com are urging internet users all over the world to use this landmark day as a reminder to back up your important files and assets in a safe space.

With the increasing digitisation of our lives, it should come as no surprise that our data and online assets (such as cherished photographs, important documents and sensitive information) that are stored on our electronic devices, has become more valuable than ever.

World Backup Day is celebrated each year and promoted by the backup industry and tech industry all over the world. The World Backup Day highlights the importance of protecting data and keeping systems and computers secure.

How did World Backup Day start?

World Backup Day started with a post on Reddit where a user wrote about losing their hard drive and wishing someone had reminded them about how important it is to backup data. The campaign started in 2011 and every year many news outlets write articles about the importance of backing up data on World Backup Day. While backing up data might seem like a tedious task, it’s essential to safeguard against the sudden loss of data. The loss of data can have a significant impact on individuals and businesses with the potential to permanently erase valuable content that cannot be replaced, especially true for content creators who rely on their digital content for their livelihood.

How do I back up my data?

The good news, there are now several ways to back up your data. You can chose physical storage or also cloud-based solutions. Using a dual backup approach that includes both physical media and cloud backups is the recommended practice and offers extra piece of mind.

Physical Media – Hard Disks, SSDs and USB Drives:

Nowadays, you have the option to select a physical media that best suits your workflow, budget, and requirements. External hard drives are one of the most economical ways to safeguard your data, and the prices for HDDs have considerably decreased over time.  For portable devices, you can invest in USB flash drives — compatible with phones, tablets, and Macs. These portable devices provide an efficient way to backup and transfer data on-the-go.

Cloud Backups:

Cloud backup has gained popularity due to its ability to store data on remote servers accessible via the internet, and the cost is affordable as well. Companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Google provide cloud storage with various tiers of storage plans that cater to different user requirements. But, if you want a personal hardware solution, brands like Western Digital offer products that might suit your needs. Also, depending on your budget, you may also make a NAS to streamline data storage and retrieval on a day-to-day basis.

If you’re still not persuaded to back up your data, here are some stats from World Backup Day.

21 % of people have never made a backup

113 phones lost or stolen every minute

29% of data loss cases are caused by accident

30% of all computers are already infected with malware

That’s why backing up our data has become so essential.
